Intro to Tolstoy

A book I'm reading has got me very curious about life and times of Leo Tolstoy. He's the next guy I'm gonna check out. Anybody that writes something like this is deserving of the sort of attention he gets:

"In historical events great men - so-called - are but labels serving to give a name to the event, and like labels they have the least possible connection with the event itself. Every action of theirs, that seems to them an act of their own free will, is in an historical sense not free at all, but in bondage to the whole course of previous history, and predestined from all eternity." (from War and Peace)
I mean, wow, .... the last part of that has some serious UMPH. Powerful.

To help me sleep...

Another late night poem to see me off to bed. It feels so good to get this stuff out so it will stop bouncing around in my cranium.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............. sleep .............

"Another late night? Was it worth it?"
Worth It

Struggle through the working day,
Keeping $core along the way.
Toss it in to the fire pit
I’m not so sure its time well spent.

Search and pray and read and think.
Hunt down The Grail, The Missing Link.
A bloody hand bangs on the door
Questions find questions then still more.

Write a poem or sing a song.
Heroic and tragic, the right and wrong.
A familiar ring when you croon
‘Cause you ain’t the first to sing that tune.

Why do we strive against impending death?
Seems a waste to take a breath.

Strangest thing did happen though.
A moment in time, ‘bout a week ago
Life’s shit didn’t stink, and time went slow.

There we were: just us, just then.
Nothing perfect or even different when
It all felt good … and right … and God only knows…
(Or perhaps even in Hell it snows).

Now I remember why I struggle each day
Why I probe my soul and the heavens and pray.
Its why I write and sing and dance.
A moment of peace, when it comes by chance.

A stinging lyric rings in my head
So damned true, after alls been said:
“I’d give you everything I’ve got, for a little piece of mind.”

Sexy Man

One of these men ran a triathlon last week.

One of them is an ex-boxer.

And one is the definition of male sexuality.

You make the call.

"Just faaaaabulous darling..."

My not-so-wicked step mom insisted that I start reading "Soul Survivor" by Phillip Yancey. I've read some of Yancey's other stuff and really enjoyed it. Of all his books that I've read, this one takes the cake for this particular time of my life. An outstanding read. Just about finished.

I'll share more thoughts when I'm done. Thanks Marita!

Oh, to the rest of you who recommended this book to me earlier, a few tips. If you want me to take your reading recommendations seriously, there are a couple of ground rules to be followed:

1) You must have read the book yourself

and

2) You must buy it for me, sign it personally, and hand deliver it (I'm flexible on the hand deliver part ... FedEx will work too).

Follow those rules, and not only will I promise to read the book, you may even have your own moment of glory on Miroslav's Musings!

Today I discovered a new blog that I've added to my blogroll (The Happy Husband). From the blog, I was linked to some lyrics that could have been straight from my heart.
